K.U.Leuven is Belgium's largest university with wide international recognition in the social sciences. K.U.Leuven contributes an interdisciplinary team to the project. The expertise of DAEE includes, among others, the economics of technological and organisational innovation in agriculture, the income formation on dairy farms and Belgium's national milk price research. The CEPO conducts applied research, focussing on all facets of the mass-media-audience interface. Apart from media structure, sociological and psychological aspects of audience research are heavily emphasised using both quantitative and qualitative methods. CEPO has a wide experience in market research investigating the consumer's acceptance of a new product or service.

Information on the Department 

The department was founded in 1971 as part of the Social Sciences Faculty. Its undergraduate programme offers a wide variety of courses in communication theory, research methodology, internal and external communication, communication ociology, film studies, popular culture, media development, structure and policy, verbal and nonverbal communication, media law and media technology. Beside taught courses the programme includes seminars, placements, and practical courses in video production and journalistic writing. Apart from the undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences, the Department also offers a postgraduate degree in Media and Information Sciences. Both independent and contract research are an important part of the Department's activities. The project falls under the responsibility of the CEPO which conducts applied contract research, focusing on all facets of the mass media-audience interface. Apart from media structure, sociological and psychological aspects of audience research are heavily emphasised. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are used.

Information on participants

Prof. Dr. Keith Roe is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor at the Department of Communication, KULeuven (B). After undergraduate and graduate studies in Britain, he obtained his PhD in 1983 from the University of Lund, Sweden. From 1985 to 1990 he was a Research Fellow at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He was a Visiting Professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Annenberg School For Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. He has researched and published extensively on the relationship between youth, children and the media, in particular with respect to literacy and school achievement.

Dr. Hilde Van den Bulck is a doctoral researcher at the KULeuven (B) and a lecturer at the University of Antwerp (B). She obtained her undergraduate degree in Communications from the KUL and an MA in Mass Communications from the C.M.C.R., University of Leicester (UK). She obtained her PhD in 2000 from the KUL. She studied and published widely on (audiovisual) media culture and identity as well as on media structures and processes.
