IntroductionSince the first introduction of automatic milking systems much has changed. Systems are improving and farmers become more familiar with the aspects in which AM differs from conventional milking, both technically and in herd management. Research makes a major contribution to these innovations and to knowledge increase. A significant part of this research is executed within a 3 year lasting EC-funded project on Automatic Milking. Herein, seven research institutes and six industrial companies from six countries join their expertise and experience. In the country where it once all started, this symposium is organised to integrate the knowledge from this project with other studies performed all over the world. The symposium will be held on March 24-26, 2004. |

The symposium is organised by the Research Institute for Animal Husbandry (PV). Its mission is to initiate and to stimulate developments in livestock farming in The Netherlands for the benefit of an internationally competitive and socially acceptable livestock industry. Currently, about 280 employees contribute to research and knowledge transfer as well as staffing 10 research farms. Four dairy farms are equipped with an automatic milking system. Since 1992, PV has extended experience with research on automatic milking covering topics such as cow behaviour and welfare, animal health, grazing strategies, farm economics, herd management, milking technique and milk quality. PV was the organiser of the symposium 'Robotic Milking' held in Lelystad, The Netherlands, August, 2000.
