EU-Project Automatic milking

In December 2000 an European project was started which focusses on automatic milking on dairy farms. In total six countries and 13 partners are involved, both research and industrial representatives. The project will last until March 2004. It aims for integration of knowledge on, and developing solutions for, any adverse effects of the introduction of automatic milking systems as a major technological innovation on dairy farms in EU member states. Topics addressed are:

  • adoption determinants
  • socio-economic impacts on farm level
  • consumer and society acceptance
  • milking hygiene and milk quality
  • animal health and welfare
  • farm operation (including grazing) and management support requirements.

Results should facilitate a smooth introduction of automatic milking without adverse, or with positive, effects on farming conditions, well being of cows, quality of milk and public acceptance, and complying with EU and national legislation. Objectives are to be achieved by an international and multidisciplinary research and dissemination approach, involving various research techniques.
