In 1785 Edward Fullwood set sail from England for
Jamaica leaving behind his brother, Matthew to establish an import and
export company. The company was to be called Fullwood & Bland Limited.
Amongst the items shipped back to England from Jamaica was the seed of the
annatto plant or the lipstick tree as it was called locally. Annatto was
and is still used in the colouring of leather, fish and cheese. This was
the newly formed company's first contact with the dairy farmer. Later its
product range was increased to include rennet used for coagulating milk
for cheese making. The original site was in Clerkenwell, London before
relocating to Ellesmere, Shropshire in the heart of the English dairy
country.
In the early 1930s Fullwood & Bland became involved with the latest
invention - machine milking. Fullwood milking machines as they are now
called are highly respected world-wide. In 1990 Fullwood was granted the
Royal warrant after installing a direct to line parlour at Prince Consort
farm for Her Majesty The Queen, in Windsor Great Park. A second parlour
was later installed.
In 1994 Fullwood & Bland, a privately owned British firm with its
owners' ancestry tracing back to the original brothers, became a holding
company after the acquisition of the Packo group of companies. Fullwood
Limited became the trading company.
The FutureFreetime is not generally associated with dairy farming but is something today's generation expect. Being tied to the farm day in day out, can affect the quality of life for all the family. Merlin takes away the chore of milking giving the farmer the choice of how to best spend the day. Greater human and animal welfare. The advantages for the farmer are obvious, no more early morning milkings in the middle of winter. Being able to dedicate more time to the many other tasks around the farm. Not having to plan the day around strict milking times. |

The benefits for the animals are just as significant. Being able to choose when they want to be milked has many advantages for the cows. They can enter the unit when they feel most comfortable and as every cow has different milking times, these are staggered throughout the day and night. Standing for long periods in collecting yards is removed along with all the associated problems this can bring. The time saved not standing around can be more productively used to eat or rest. Bully cows can no longer intimidate the quieter animals. Altogether a far more restful environment for man and cow is evident with the bonus of increased milk yields and improved quality and cleanliness of the milk.
